The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is tasked with fostering international cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. UNOOSA serves as the secretariat of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). The Committee has two core subcommittees: Scientific/Technical, and Legal.

Intersputnik has been a permanent observer to the United Nations Committee on Outer Space since 1985 and regularly participates in the work of the Committee and its subcommittees. Intersputnik has traditionally been interested ithe discussion of issues related to the use of the geostationary orbit for space communications. Working through the Legal Subcommittee allows Intersputnik to remain at the forefront of global regulatory issues in the use of outer space.
