Sustainability of Space Activities

The sustainability of space activities refers to their capacity for ongoing implementation and maintenance over an indefinite period. This factor is key to the development of all space-related services and facilities It is now widely recognised that the sustainability of space activities is at risk. There are several factors contributing to this concern, including the significant rise in the number of launches, the deployment of large constellations of satellites in low Earth orbit, and the increasing risk of uncontrolled collisions in space leading to the proliferation of space debris.
The fundamental basis of Intersputnik's activities is open, mutually beneficial cooperation with international organisations of the industry, public and governmental institutions, the research community and business entities all over the world. The experience gained by the Organization over more than half a century of operations in the field of space activities and telecommunications is used to preserve sustainable space as a prerequisite of further development of the satellite communications industry.
As a practical contribution to the sustainability of space activities, Intersputnik acceded to the Space Industry Debris Statement3 made at the World Economic Forum in 2021 along with other representatives of the global space industry. In 2022, the Organization took part in the preparation of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) report on the implementation of the Guidelines for the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities (LTS Guidelines4).
Intersputnik also continues its work in the Working Group on the Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities, convened by the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. At the same time, Intersputnik consistently advocates for a cooperative approach to satellite development, aiming to reduce the number of satellites launched into space and mitigate orbital congestion.
