Intersputnik traditionally participates in ITU-organised events and discussions on satellite communications and the use of outer space to connect the unconnected. The Organization's delegation attended the forum and Intersputnik representative was speaking at one of the round tables.
This year, the Space Sustainability Forum once again brought together top executives and leading experts from commercial companies, government agencies, academia and other space industry stakeholders. The unifying idea of the forum was the responsible use of outer space through universal and equal cooperation.
“Space and spectrum situational awareness is mission insurance, but it can only be as strong as its data, common formats, clear responsibility, and a culture of sharing”, said Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General, in her welcoming speech. She also noted that the number of requests to ITU for orbit resources had multiplied 5.5 times over the past decade. And this once again demonstrates the need to address issues of space sustainability. “We need to work together to keep the process fair and to keep the orbital and spectrum environment usable for all”, emphasized Ms. Bogdan-Martin.
The forum featured the latest developments in the field of space traffic management, especially for large satellite constellations, and ensuring the safety of space flights. It also discussed issues of ensuring sustainability in space exploration beyond near-Earth space, particularly on the Moon and in the lunar space.
A separate topic of the forum was preparation for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27). While actively participating in the global regulatory process for the benefit of its Member States, Intersputnik monitors key global trends in the field of orbital and frequency resource regulation and contributes to shaping the current agenda. At the forum's session "Preparing for the World Radiocommunication Assemblies and Conferences”, Intersputnik Executive Director Elina Morozova was speaking in a panel discussion on frequency regulation for the benefit of the satellite community. Preparation for the radio conference affects the interests of all satellite industry players, as 80% of the WRC-27 agenda in one way or another are related to the regulation of satellite systems. As an international intergovernmental organization, Intersputnik supports ITU initiatives to create a sustainable environment conducive to space activities for the benefit of humanity, and, first and foremost, to create a reliable, interference-free radio communications environment for universal connection of people to relevant digital services.
